Why is this important?

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK, with around 1 in 8 men being diagnosed during their lifetime. The risk is even higher for Black men and for those with a father or brother who has had prostate cancer. Early detection can make a significant difference to treatment options and outcomes.

Many men with early prostate cancer have no symptoms at all, which is why understanding your individual risk and discussing screening with a healthcare professional is so important.

If you have any concerns about your prostate health, urinary symptoms, or your personal risk of prostate cancer, always speak to your own GP, who can provide advice based on your individual circumstances.

Raising awareness through early detection Miss Jyoti Shah MBE, Macmillan Consultant Urological Surgeon at North West

Anglia NHS Foundation Trust, is nationally recognised for her work in improving prostate cancer awareness and access to screening opportunities through her pioneering Fighting Prostate Cancer community campaign.

Since launching her community outreach work in 2016, Miss Shah has taken prostate cancer awareness initiatives directly into local communities, including mobile health check clinics across Peterborough and the surrounding region. Her dedication to improving healthcare awareness and equality was recognised with the award of an MBE for services to medicine.

A personal story inspiring change

The event has also been inspired by local prostate cancer campaigner Dave Young, whose own experience highlights the importance of awareness and early detection. Dave was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2024 despite feeling completely healthy and experiencing no symptoms. Following successful treatment, he has dedicated himself to encouraging other men to take control of their health, have open conversations and consider appropriate health checks.

A simple PSA blood test changed Dave’s life, and since his diagnosis he has worked alongside healthcare professionals, community organisations and local businesses to raise awareness of prostate cancer. He has supported fundraising initiatives for Prostate Cancer UK, organised community PSA testing events and continues to share his story to encourage more men to seek advice and make informed choices.

Supporting healthier communities

The event reflects the shared commitment of healthcare professionals, communityorganisations and local advocates to ensure more men understand the importance of knowing their health, recognising potential risks and seeking advice when needed.

Through collaboration between Purple Horizons, Miss Shah, Dave Young and healthcare partners, the initiative demonstrates the power of community-led awareness in helping to improve understanding and encourage earlier conversations around prostate cancer.
